Safe Unsound
In rural County Mayo, three Ukrainian families displaced by war are learning to live in two places at once. Kate was a corporate lawyer. Now she must learn an entirely foreign legal system from scratch while helping her children adapt to a new life without their conscripted father. Victor, a retired father, discovers warmth and camaraderie in a local men’s group - but finds language barriers keep the friendships he longs for just out of reach. Meanwhile, matriarch Maryna tries to hold her family steady through housing insecurity and financial strain, as an unlikely friendship with a local Irish family begins to take root.
Filmed over two years and set to an original score blending Irish and Ukrainian folk traditions - composed by acclaimed Irish violinist Aoife Ní Bhriain and Chris Hill (co-writer of RAYE's This Music May Contain Hope), with vocals from the world-renowned Bach Choir - Safe Unsound is a tender, observational portrait of three families seeking stability amidst an increasingly uncertain future.
